Tribute to an exceptional medical doctor, Prof. Tanja N. Fehm, MD.
This year, the award of the Klüh Foundation for the Promotion of Innovation in Science and Research, which is endowed with 25,000 Euros, goes to the outstanding medical doctor in Düsseldorf, Prof. Dr. med. Tanja N. Fehm. The Director of the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics with the Gynaecological Cancer Centre certified by the German Cancer Society has combined interdisciplinary treatment concepts and the latest therapy techniques to the benefit of the patients.
The Foundation’s prize, which has been awarded since 1987, was presented yesterday in Düsseldorf’s historic City Hall in the presence of the Mayor, Josef Hinkel. The laudatory speech was delivered by Dr. Andreas Gassen, Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.
Together with her team, the specialist in gynaecological oncology at the University Hospital develops individual treatment concepts tailored to the specific clinical picture. Medical innovations and insights are integrated into patient care as early as possible. When planning therapy, the wishes and fears of the patients are prioritised and detailed information is provided. Above all, in many cases the possibility of minimally invasive treatment proves a great advantage and is a gentler procedure when it comes to the patient’s recovery process. Tumours can now also be treated using minimally invasive procedures.
In the words of Dr. Gassen, the laudator: “I am delighted to be able to present the Klüh Foundation Prize to a medical colleague and scientist who is committed to combining outstanding research with the greatest possible closeness to patients in practical care”.
The University Hospital Düsseldorf is one of the specialised centres that enable minimally invasive tumour treatment. With a focus on basic research into carcinogenesis, the possibilities of personalised medicine are constantly being developed. As part of the Centre for Integrated Oncology (CIO), the University Hospital Düsseldorf also cooperates with the university hospitals in Aachen and Bonn. German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe) has honoured this alliance, which provides cancer therapy at the highest level. An international panel of experts has certified that the CIO has made significant advances in cancer treatment and provides the highest level of patient care.
