As the company celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1986, Josef Klüh set up a foundation, the Klüh Foundation for the Promotion of Innovation in Science and Research, to show his gratitude for the company's success. Projects that are particularly worthy of support are honoured at an annual awards ceremony. The Foundation has supported a wide range of medical research projects over the years. Previous awards have usually been given to medical research projects that receive no public funding.
The Klüh foundation has distributed more than 780,000 euros in prize money since 1986.
Laureates in recent years have included Eva Luise Köhler, patron of ACHSE e.V. (2012), Dr. Ayse Gül-Schmidt, Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Charité Campus Virchow, Berlin (2014) and Prof. Thomas E. Schläpfer, Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Bonn (2016) and Prof. William Martin, Institute of Molecular Evolution, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (2018).
In 2019 the prize went to Prof. Dr. med. James Nagarajah at the University Clinics Essen and Nijmwegen. The Klüh Foundation honours the scientist for his groundbreaking research on thyroid carcinomas.
